Sore and bleeding gums during pregnancy

Your belly is not the only thing that swells up during pregnancy. Your gums are also rebelling and making you uncomfortable these days.

Bleeding gums🩸 are more common during the second trimester. You should expect to see red blood on your toothbrush often.🙁

👄When bleeding gums stop?

You’ll probably see bleeding gums disappear after delivery. Stay rested. Gum diseases are not prevalent among pregnant Mommies.🤰 If your gums are fine before pregnancy, they’re likely to be fine after.😃


Causes of bleeding gums

👄Surging hormones, swelling gums

A strong wave of estrogen and progesterone hormones in your body increases blood flows🩸 to your mucus membranes and makes them swell. Hence, your gums become inflamed and more vulnerable to bacteria🦠 and plaque.

👄Dietary changes

Now that you’re pregnant🤰, you’re probably eating more carbs🍚 and sweets, and producing less saliva. Your oral environment now becomes habitat for plaque and cavities.

👄Delayed reaction to morning sickness

If you’re still having morning sickness, your mouth might be upset by all the acid baths everytime you throw up🤮. If you want to brush your teeth🦷, you should wait for about 1 hour as the acid may have softened the enamel on your teeth. Rinse your mouth with water carefully.

👄Toothpaste aversion

If you’re avoiding brushing your teeth because you hate your toothpaste, you’ll be likely to have plaques and bleeding gums.😟 Try to find your favorite toothpaste and brush your teeth diligently.


What to do about bleeding gums

👄Get checked

Try to visit your dentist👩‍⚕️ at least once during your pregnancy for a checkup and cleaning. You also need to inform your dentist that you’re pregnant so you can get the pregnancy-safe treatment.😃

👄Take care of your teeth

You have to brush your teeth🦷 at least twice a day and floss regularly to get rid of food remnants stuck on your teeth. Your brush should be labeled soft, never medium or hard. Be gentle with your gums since they are prone to bleeding if you aggressively brush them.

👄Brush your tongue

Not only your teeth but also your tongue👅 needs extra care. Brushing your tongue regularly helps reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.😛

👄Have a healthy diet

Make sure you include plenty of vitamin C🍊 in your diet, which can strengthen your gums and help them stay healthy. Fulfill your calcium requirement to keep your teeth strong.🦷
