Late pregnancy warning signs

The final period of your pregnancy can be a pretty surreal time. Even when you think it’s nearly the end and nothing can go wrong, complications can still arise and are easily managed if detected early.⚠️

Gestational diabetes

🤰Symptoms

Due to hormonal changes, the insulin level is not effectively regulated and incapable of lowering blood sugar🩸, leading to abnormally high glucose levels in your blood. While diabetes is not harmful to the mother, it causes several problems for the fetus such as cesarean delivery or birth injuries.☹️

🤰Treatment

Diabetes can be under control by healthily eating🥘 and taking medicines.💊 Contrary to popular conception, there’s no specific diet to treat diabetes. It’s important to center your diet around low intake of carbohydrates and regular consumption of fruits and veggies.

Exercises🏃 can also help you stay in shape. Your doctor may also prescribe insulin if necessary. The good news is that gestational diabetes often go away after delivery when insulin level goes back to normal.😃

Preeclampsia

🤰Symptoms

The first and most noticeable sign is high blood pressure🩸 during a routine prenatal visit followed up by increased protein in the urine, sudden weight gain and swelling of the hands✋ and feet🦶. Other symptoms include loss of vision, headaches that are resistant to medication, easy bruising, severe pain on your right side or stomach, shortness of breath.

🤰Treatment

You have to seek emergency help when you experience these symptoms. You have to stay at the hospital for observation and to manage your blood pressure until the baby is ready for delivery. Premature birth might take place if necessary to protect you and your baby.👶

Preterm labor

🤰Symptoms

Signs of preterm labor can be so subtle that you may mistake them for pregnancy symptoms.🤰 Symptoms include diarrhea, frequent urination, lower back pain. You may also experience other severe labor symptoms such as leaking of fluid from the vagina, painful contractions.

🤰Treatment

The third trimester is the perfect time for the lungs of the baby to develop. If your baby comes out too early👶, the body hasn’t had enough time to fully develop yet and is at risk for health problems.

Your doctor👩‍⚕️ will try to prolong your pregnancy to increase chances for a healthy baby. If preterm labor begins after 36 weeks, the baby is usually delivered since the lungs are pretty much developed at this stage.🙆‍♀️
